When I first was hired at the Jackson Center, I was a little worried that I might not be the best person for the job. To this day I still don’t know if I’m the best person, but that’s what drives me to work hard for our cause. At first, I was intimidated because I knew how much work is done at the Jackson Center. But now I see that the work we do is a whole lot bigger and deeper than us. Now I see the injustices that we are facing.
I have made a personal investment in the work that we do. I think being in charge of Northside News distribution was a great first fit for me to really introduce me to the neighborhood. Problem solving is one thing I think I do well, and I think I helped fine-tune Northside News. I’ve enjoyed going to people’s homes and talking to them about what’s happening in their community, about their homes and about their personal histories because I think it’s rare and that there aren’t a lot of people willing to open up and share their stories. Listening and finding out about the life of others is one thing that has always brought joy to my heart.

Also, working with the youth in Fusion Youth Speak is an opportunity that I am excited for because I really want to teach them something. It is challenging though, because as they say “how do you pour wisdom into a full cup?” We are working to help them take in what we mentors try to teach and apply it to their lives.
Overall, working at the Jackson Center has been a journey from shallow to deep for me. I’m thankful for this opportunity, and just working through the struggles of my transformation at the Marian Cheek Jackson Center. =) <3
