Ms. Velma Perry (1921-2019) was a fierce neighborhood leader, fighting for noise ordinances, conservation districts, and quality of life. Designated a “Chapel Hill Town Treasure” and known as the “Mayor of Lindsay Street,” Ms. Velma lived almost all of her 98 years at her home: 308 Lindsay Street.
In 2018, Ms. Velma and her family sold 308 Lindsay Street to the Northside Landbank. As part of the acquisition agreement, Ms. Velma and her family designated that the primary future use of 308 Lindsay Street be a center that supported elders in Northside to safely and affordably age in their community.
To fulfill Ms. Velma’s vision, we are transforming 308 Lindsay Street into a group respite space and home-base for community eldercare.
Our bold vision for community eldercare in Northside is community-embedded and community-led. We hope you will support us in building the future of community eldercare in Northside.
308 Lindsay Updates
Northside Compass Group: Our community-first development model amplifies the leadership of neighbors who have long led organizing and resilience within the Northside community. The Northside Compass Group has directed the Jackson Center to develop 308 Lindsay Street as an eldercare facility.
Architectural Designs: A professional architect created renovation designs for the property to become an accessible and inviting group respite program. We’re designing 308 Lindsay Street with universal design principles, envisioning a true “third space” accessible to all those seeking community and respite.
Student Learning: Occupational therapy graduate students have conducted research and developed a strategic plan to support the vision for 308 Lindsay Street. We continue to identify opportunities for students to both learn from and contribute to this community-led project.

Operations Partner: We are thrilled to share we have identified an operations partner in UnAged, an organization that provides pathways to creative aging for families, entrepreneurs and facilities. UnAged combines principles of assisted living and person-centered care with elements of improvisation and theater to create inspiring senior care homes and elevate caregiving to an art form.
Development Committee: The Jackson Center has assembled leading community members from Northside, Pine Knolls, and Tin Top to guide the fundraising and development efforts for 308 Lindsay Street.
