In September 2016, we honored our Northside neighbors new and old, in light of the retention, transition, attraction and general market accomplishments of the first year of Northside Neighborhood Initiative. The Northside Neighborhood Initiative (NNI) was announced March 9, 2015.  It is a partnership among neighborhood residents, UNC, Self-Help, the Jackson Center, the Town of Carrboro, and the Town of Chapel Hill that pursues a shared vision for the historic Northside Neighborhood: a family-friendly, multi-generational community that balances the needs of long-term residents, new residents, homeowners, renters and students.

In only a year’s time we have seen the following accomplishments

  • First increase in African-American population since 1980
  • 15 land bank properties
  • 17 affordable units created or in process
  • 31 home repairs for long-time residents
  • 18 households (avg age of 77) received property tax support
  • 380 students volunteer in Northside 2015-2016
  • 60% reduction of noise/nuisance violations
